CLOSING EVENTS

On the final day of the festival, participants will explore historic areas from Galata to Karaköy before gathering at Frankhan for the closing party and panel. The Frankhan space will be transformed into a lively marketplace, featuring second-hand vinyl vendors, used bookshops, pop-up food and drink stalls, and various production stands. The closing panel will delve into the dichotomy of Alaturka (Turkish style) vs. Alafranga (European style) in jazz, offering a thought-provoking discussion. This will be followed by a Jam Session, where prominent figures from both Eastern and Western musical traditions will come together to improvise.

ALATURKA  AND  ALAFRANGA  IN JAZZ

beyoglu-caz-festivali-cazda-alaturka.jpg

In our country, traditions such as jazz, Alaturka, and Alafranga may initially seem to harbor a deep contrast. Whether this perception of contrast is inherent to the nature of these musical genres or whether it reflects ongoing political, economic, and geopolitical dynamics remains an open question. Considering jazz's relationship with improvisation, as well as its continuous references to its own history, key figures, and accumulated literature, its ability to be both free and spontaneous, yet also conservative and didactic, makes it highly comparable to the traditions we consider Alaturka, such as Turkish Art Music and Folk Music. Similarly, the performance of Alaturka music, often associated with strict rules and the apprenticeship process, is balanced by the improvisational 'opening' it offers to the musician. Within this framework, how can we speak of a genre like Turkish Jazz, which has been performed at the intersection of these two traditions by innovative musicians for many years? What is the relationship of this music, which manifests itself most effectively in Istanbul—and especially in Beyoğlu—compared to other places, to the ongoing tradition of 'neighborhoodism' in Turkey?

RECEP ŞENCAN

beyoglu-caz-festivali-recep-sencan.jpg

Recep Şencan, host of the Caz Türbülans program on Açık Radyo since 2005, has been performing as a DJ at various venues and clubs across Istanbul for over 15 years. As one of the resident DJs at Gizli Bahçe, one of the city's most iconic music venues, Şencan is known for his groove-oriented, multi-genre sets.

This performance group brings together accomplished musicians from diverse genres and geographies in an improvisational environment, transforming the concept of improvisation into a dynamic concert experience. By featuring as many new artists as possible in each performance, the group creates an unpredictable outcome that surprises both the performers and the audience, offering a flow that is entirely unscripted. As part of the Beyoğlu Jazz Festival, the group will include familiar faces from past performances, while drawing on the musical foundation they’ve built so far. The performance will reinterpret jazz from a vibrant, multifaceted perspective, with artists such as Şenova Ülker, Şebnem Akten, Asher Gamedze, Muhlis Berberoğlu, Gökçe İşler, Burak Dursun, Barış Ertürk, Payam Ghasemi, Joel Grip, and Diler Özer coming together to create a bridge from East to West.
