Hrant Lusigyan Walked Through Beyoğlu
Barkev Balımyan, Sadettin Davran, Orhan Tekelioğlu
If there was ever a list of Turkish jazz “stars”, one of the first names on that list would undoubtedly be Hrant Lusigyan (1917-1993). As the first-ever Beyoğlu Jazz Festival, we see it as a historical responsibility to honor Lusigyan, one of the most important musicians in the history of Beyoğlu music scene. This interview, moderated by academic Orhan Tekelioğlu, will feature two distinguished guests. One of them, Sadettin Davran, is a prominent music writer who not only knew Lusigyan personally but also wrote numerous articles about him over the years. The other guest, Dr. Barkev Balımyan, is the author of a forthcoming biography of Hrant Lusigyan, to be published by Aras Publishing. Dr. Balımyan was also one of Lusigyan’s closest friends in his later years. We believe that recalling and honoring this incredible musician, last celebrated in 1982 on the occasion of his 40th anniversary in the arts, is a highly valuable act after all these years. We are grateful to have the opportunity to do so through this interview.
